Conversion and Translation

This project will work with texts of religious disputation and argument between Jews, Christians, and Muslims. It will focus on the writing of the convert Abner of Burgos (d. 1347) and work to create basic working texts of Abner's writing in Spanish and English. Skills/Knowledge to be gained: knowledge of translation, medieval Spanish, Hebrew, exposure to medieval manuscripts, understanding of the history of religious conflict in the Mediterranean.

Student Tasks and Responsibilities: Depending on students' linguistic skills, tasks could include work on creating readable and searchable text of polemical texts by Abner and other writers, creation of digital images of different medieval manuscripts from microfilm, and/or the translation into English of different texts in Spanish and Hebrew. For students with knowledge in Latin, we will work on learning to read and edit medieval manuscripts.

Student Qualifications: Interest in religion and the Middle Ages, Knowledge of Spanish, Hebrew or Latin (or others--the more languages the better!) and/or knowledge in working with scanning and OCR.
