The Aesthetics and Politics of Chinese Dance   

Following on the success of last year’s Chinese Classical Dance Residency, we wish to continue exposure to Chinese dance at UM, this time with a major forces in Chinese contemporary dance, Hou Ying and Peng Zhang. They will spend one week at UM, where they will teach a series of contemporary dance, music and choreography workshops and present guest lectures on Chinese contemporary dance and contemporary performance art in China. This event connect to events at the Confucius Institute, with the goal of presenting contemporary Chinese performance as an integral part of “Chinese culture.” Workshops will focus on Hou Ying’s unique contemporary dance training concept and technique, developed through a combination of Chinese dance background and years of experience as a core member of Shen Wei Dance Arts of New York.
