Cultural Beliefs on Views about Depression & Help-Seeking Among African Americans

This research is aimed at better understanding the influence cultural beliefs (as formed  and transmitted through racial socialization) have on views about depression and approaches to help-seeking and service utilization among African Americans.  Through this work I hope to understand how messages about mental health and help-seeking are developed, transmitted, and embodied by African Americans.  By understanding how African Americans think about depression and help-seeking, we can also understand why some African Americans may not use professional mental health services when they are not limited by financial or other structural barriers.  Ultimately, I would like to see this information inform social work practice with the aim of increasing service utilization for African Americans who might benefit from services.  Data for this project is both qualitative (in-depth interview) & quantitative (survey instrument).

Student Tasks and Responsibilities: The student will participate in many aspects of the research process: literature searches and summaries, transcribing qualitative interviews, development of survey instruments, potential analysis and writing opportunities, weekly research meetings and other investigative work.
