Re: Tool-Kit for Detroit

The Re: Tool-Kit is a study of fabrication and making in Detroit today.  One often hears that you can get anything made in Detroit. We wanted to find out what is really being made NOW, where, and by whom.  The objective of the research is to gather insights about the skills and services available in Detroit today by conducting interviews with people who make things—fabricators, craftsmen and artists. Our ultimate goal is to better understand how fabrication in Detroit is evolving and to facilitate collaboration between the design and fabrication communities. The research will result in 3 products: a digital map showing how fabrication shops and studios shape the city, a tool-kit with stories, information, and guidelines for best communication practices between designers and fabricators, and an exhibit which will open on November 15th at the Taubman College Liberty Loft Research Annex.  As of September 1, 2012, 50 interviews with Detroit fabricators will have been collected by student researchers.  Additional student assistance is needed in analyzing, organizing and preparing this data for inclusion in tool-kit, digital map, and exhibit. This study is funded by a research grant from Alan and Cynthia Berkshire at Taubman College at the University of Michigan. The research team to date includes 4 professors and 6 students from the architecture and art and design departments.
